Search for HQ “American-made train horns” and you’ll see dozens of brands. But not all of them pour their own metal. Many sell horns that were cast overseas, or assembled here from imported parts. So who really makes them?
The short answer
USA Train Horn casts its horns by hand in Hialeah, Florida, using poured cast aluminum and stainless steel hardware. [Add: years casting, horns per month, alloy.] You can read the full story in From Hialeah to the Whole USA.
Three kinds of “USA” train horns
- Imported and rebranded. Cast overseas, sold under a U.S. label.
- Assembled in the USA. Imported parts, final assembly here.
- Cast in the USA. Metal poured, cast and finished domestically.
Only the third means the part that creates the sound, the horn body, was made here. The Federal Trade Commission holds that “Made in USA” claims require all or virtually all of a product to be made in the United States, so the label alone should make you ask questions. 5 questions to ask any seller
- Where is the horn body cast, not just packed or assembled?
- Can you show the foundry or casting process (photos or video)?
- What alloy is it, and what is the wall thickness?
- Who backs the warranty: the manufacturer or a reseller?
- If a part breaks, can I get a replacement from the maker?
A manufacturer answers these in seconds. A reseller usually can’t.
Why it affects sound
Wall thickness and metal density shape tone, volume and how long the horn lasts. Cast aluminum is also the traditional construction of real locomotive horns (see this overview of the train horn and how sand casting works). After you buy: install, maintain, stay legal
A cast horn lasts for years if the air system behind it is right. Our guide to maintaining and troubleshooting your truck air horn system covers leaks, solenoid valves and tank draining.
